calisthenics vs free weights for functional strength

tbh i prefer bodyweight exercises like pullups and dips because they build great core stability and joint health for hiking. gym weights are cool for pure mass, but calisthenics feels more natural for movement control. what are your thoughts? do you mix both in your routine?

I actually combine both approaches. I use weighted calisthenics for upper body strength and free weights, specifically squats and deadlifts, for lower body development. This hybrid method offers the best of both worlds for overall joint integrity and force production.

that hybrid approach makes a lot of sense tbh. lower body bodyweight training like pistol squats is good, but nothing compares to heavy deadlifts for building posterior chain strength needed for carrying heavy packs on trails. might try mixing them.
